Keeps shutting down and key characters are messed up

I just got this laptop a few weeks ago and it's already having problems. Every once in a while it reboots and says it has a hard drive problem and it started a few days after I got it but I thought it was a one time thing but it continues. The characters on some keys do not match what they display and some characters are NOT available AT ALL! At first I thought it was a good buy but now I want to keep my old laptop. hp I specialize in CS, so I can't afford to lose my code due to a laptop reboot out of the blue.
