A few days before Hurricane Sally made landfall, the waters on the north Gulf Coast were roiling, but for a seasoned kayaker it still was usable for navigation (so I thought) . So I made my way through various swamps and bays, photographed (for a $10,000+ professional set) the nature (eagles, ospreys, pelicans, alligators, fish, dolphins, etc.) and tried to document how I was doing began to change their behavior. . change, with the coming hurricane. It was an amazing day in terms of photographing wildlife on film as they were more worried about the approaching storm than my presence which made for some amazing shots. a little nearer, and the outer lane passed while I was in the middle of a fairly large bay. It surfaced so quickly that it was impossible to reach the shore. I was in a sit in of kayak with no skirt/apron. The water went from crystal clear calm to 3-5 foot waves in 15 minutes. For 30 minutes my kayak won wave after wave. It was impossible to avoid. The kayak threatened to sink. I remember the last few hits as I pushed myself out of the sinking ship. It was a surreal "Titanic moment" as he wrinkled his nose and slipped beneath the crashing waves of rough water. As I watched the kayak leave me, several waves hit me and snapped me out of my trance. My marine instincts kicked in and in a situation where many people would have drowned I was fortunately able to swim about a mile to the bridge that crosses the bay and climb up the embankment from there. The most dangerous part of the journey was the way home along the main road. But that is not the purpose of this product review. The purpose of this product review is to let you know that as I saw the storm clouds approaching and the waves beginning to rise, I secured my professional photography gear in this waterproof Yeti backpack. . As the kayak sank, I positioned the Yeti so I could easily land her kayak with it in hand. During a life-threatening swim to shore, I towed the Yeti back to shore with my gear strapped inside along with today's one-off shots, occasionally leaning against it for a brief breather amidst the radical wilderness of crashing waves. A few hours after drinking, I returned to my safe house. I opened the Yeti expecting to find dirty, sodden gear - after all, even the Yeti couldn't handle what I'd just experienced. I couldn't believe my eyes when I took the camera out of my bag. It was completely dry, as was everything inside the Yeti, even the little flimsy lens tissues. This capped the end of a life-threatening moment. The relief that the Yeti had saved the priceless photos was so overwhelming that I cried. Big Burley, salty, crunchy old man. . . cried. The Yeti backpack is not the most comfortable mountain backpack. If you need something that can walk two or three miles on a beach, lake, or mountain trails, that's fine. It doesn't have the most organized internal shared space inside. This isn't the biggest backpack on the market. However, if you are looking for a backpack that will keep your most prized belongings dry and even help save your life by acting as a makeshift lifeline, then this backpack is for you. If you're ok with getting your gear wet, you can settle for something else. But if you are venturing into harsh climates and environments with essential gear, I recommend this Yeti product unreservedly and unreservedly.
