I researched this type of bookshelf for a long time and finally settled on this one. There is a wide range of materials, sizes and prices from suppliers at Revain and elsewhere. It's not the cheapest, but it's mid-range. The wood is durable and has a beautiful appearance. It's not big, but big enough to easily fit as many books as shown in the photo. Each shelf is several inches deep, allowing you to either fit a single book or arrange different sized books to increase the number of books that fit on each shelf. My 4 year old can easily reach all levels of this bookshelf to retrieve and return books himself. He is ten times more likely to pick up a book from this bookshelf than from a standard bookshelf where he only sees the spine. The box it came in was heavy. If you've ever collected something at Ikea, you won't have a problem with that. My four year old son helped me put it together in about 20 minutes. To do this, follow the instructions to make sure you are not inserting any parts the wrong way round or anything like that. This bookshelf is deeper than a regular bookshelf and holds fewer books than regular bookshelves, but if you want your child to be more likely to get books off the shelf then this bookcase is for you!
