When you first open the container you are transported to a warm summer day. A cool sea breeze wafts around you. THIS is the heart of the fragrance! The product has the perfect name. The scent is fresh and clean, but not overpowering at all. Open it, stand by the door to the sea and take a deep breath. Fresh! The cream is thick in the container and quickly whips up into a nice, light foam. However, like their previous product, the shaving cream is thick at first, becomes super lubricious and foams up a bit on the skin. Two things happen: the shave 2.) The skin is not only protected but also lubricated in an unrivaled way. You will notice this if you do a traditional wet shave, on the first rinse after the first shave. The suppleness is clearly noticeable and lasts until the end of the shave. A little deceived. The cream settles well, but the tendrils are shiny. Even though your face is covered with light foam, you can still see the "attack path". (Benefit for first-time wet razors.) It absorbs into the skin and makes it super smooth. I often forgot to use an aftershave balm when using Vikings Blade Sandalwood & Cedar Shaving Cream. The shave was so comfortable. The Black Ocean is no different. In addition, the razor leaves no thick marks. It comes out clean too. I remember my father used a similar product when I was a kid. The foam on his face was never a full "Christmas beard." Rather, it was like Black Ocean. Good foam for a smooth and close shave. He always remained without scratches and cuts. Unlike other shaving creams, the trick is not to add a lot of water when creating the lather. Less more. Start as dry as possible and work your way up. I give Black Ocean top marks for its lubricating and protective properties. Simply outstanding! However, foam and lightness is a different approach that may need some tweaking. I think men preparing for an important date or event will pull this out of the closet for its ability to give a close and safe shave (rather than other soaps and creams). And the fresh sea scent is a wonderful bonus. Combine it with my favorite Vikings Blade Godfather razor and you'll look forward to a perfect, smooth and comfortable shave every time you use it. Update: 4/22/2017 (This discussion is about Black Ocean, Sandalwood, and Cedar shaving creams.) Let me say that after years of using electric razors and disposables, I only returned to wet shaving last year (2016). My initial struggle with wet shaving all those years ago was simple. No one has ever shown me the proper method and technique for wet shaving. Now that I've been a wet razor for almost a year, I've had a great experience trying out different razors, blades and shaving creams. Now I can honestly say I really LOVE Vikings Black Ocean and Blade Sandalwood and Cedar Shaving Creams! I understand that both are not like other shaving creams and soaps. By using these creams you have to get rid of all your expectations. This is not Taylor of Old Bond Street, Colonel Conk, The Art of Shaving or any other soap or cream you may have used in the past. Vikings Blade Black Ocean (and its other great scent, Sandalwood and Cedar Shaving Cream) is light. , frothy and super smooth. Vikings Blade boys say it's "old school". I can understand that. It was about 80 years ago when most shaving creams didn't give you the full "Christmas beard" we used to expect. (I think thick shaving cream is a new marketing phenomenon.) Here are just some of the things I learned from using both creams. (And by the way, Black Ocean, Sandalwood, and Cedar all have the same effect. The only difference, obviously, is their flavor.) The water to cream ratio is very important. It will take you several attempts to dial it. Once you do this, the cream turns into a nice pile of foam in just 30-40 seconds. So here's the best way to do it: Soak a badger brush. (I've found that a badger brush works best. But a boar or even synthetic brush will work, too.) Give a few shakes after soaking, but don't wring. If you use a dry foam bowl, do not wring it out. If you had hot water in your shaving bowl, gently wring the brush out after shaking it off to heat it up. The small amount of water left in the bowl compensates for the lack of water in the brush. The brush should be slightly damp but not too saturated. Too dry is not good, too wet is not good either. Use an almond-sized amount of heavy cream. Depending on your water (soft or hard) you may need to add a little more or maybe a little less. Vikings Blade recommends half a teaspoon. I find I don't use it much. Again, it may take two or three tries to figure out the right amount of each ingredient (water and cream). Put the cream in a bowl, start foaming with a brush and if the proportion is right you will have foam in 30-40 seconds. Now wet your face. Instead of lathering up, use a brush to lather your face in circular motions. I found it really helped create a little more lather and smoothness. Then you can go ahead and do some drawing moves if you like. Yes, the foam absorbs into the skin and becomes somewhat transparent. However, if you take the step of lathering your face, you'll find that the cream remains quite noticeable. Especially if you drew it. And here's the nice part. The cream forms an ultra-smooth layer, ideal for shaving. (I should note here that I have not found it necessary to use preshave oil. My experience is that applying preshave immediately prior to lathering only blocks the effectiveness of this cream.) I use a Vikings Blade. Chieftain straight razor with Personna Blue blade. This first pass with grain will be very smooth. Also, your hands will be quite slippery due to the water and cream on your fingers. That's why I like using the Chieftain razor. The deeply grooved (knurled) handle allows me to hold it even with smooth hands. If you're using a smooth-grip razor, make sure you dry your hands well. This cream also forms a SMOOTH foam. Think it's smooth, not thick. After the first pass, wash your face with a few splashes of water. You'll find that the smoothness really stays on the skin. Cannot be rinsed out completely. It's good. Foam for the second shave. The residual smoothness combined with the new foam makes the second pass (over the fibers) really VERY smooth. Much smoother than the first. Rinse again and repeat the third pass (against the fibers). Blade buffing is nothing more than very short, light strokes to remove small stubble in problem areas of your face. For example, I lightly polish the corners of the mouth and chin with a blade. When you're done, empty the sink and rinse with warm tap water. You will find that using fresh tap water removes the stickiness more effectively. (If you use rinse water, you'll only get slippery water back on your skin.) Then rinse with cold water to unclog your pores. Again straight from the tap. Dry. After shaving my skin is incredibly soft and really smooth. So much so that I almost forgot to use an aftershave balm. And when I apply the aftershave balm, I only feel the skin, not the stubble. Really nice. My skin borders on the sensitive side and I did not find this cream irritating. There are no burns or redness. Also, there is something in the cream that really prevents scratches and cuts. The razor glides over the skin and cuts the mustache really clean. No jerking or pulling. I think it takes a user two or three shaves to really appreciate this shaving cream and as I said before finding the right mix of cream and water (unlike some other popular shaving creams which can be so difficult to finding the right proportions). . I think, and this is just a guess, that the cream is so different that the skin also has to adjust and get used to it. shaving experience. I'll give you an example. There have been razor blades that I have used that were just awful. But when I return to them a few months later, I find them more comfortable. I think over time and continued wet shaving my face has changed a bit. I think it could be the same scenario with Vikings Blade shaving cream. So please keep an open mind. Try Vikings Blade Sandalwood & Cedar Shaving Cream. Give it a few tries and some time. You'll find that once you find the right mix, it will become one of your favorites. And please don't listen to people telling you to stay away from a certain wet shaving product, especially if they've only used it once and failed. It's pretty limited. Sometimes a few more uses and a change in formula or approach is enough. Hope this information helps. :)
