I originally bought this to support a ham radio so I could see the screen better when working remotely. I liked the first one so much that I bought the second one to keep in my hiking gear. This is intelligent design. It folds flat and folds so it's quite small but opens wide enough to hold a phone, tablet, laptop, e-reader, or in my case, a portable ham radio. I didn't find any sharp edges and it comes with a padded storage pouch. It fits easily in a laptop bag or backpack - I keep it in a waterproof case with the radio. There are six angle settings, making it easier to type on a laptop or view a tablet, phone, or e-reader like Kindle. There are pads at all contact points and on the underside to prevent the device from slipping or being damaged. It feels solid and should last a long time with a little care.
