This item was purchased for our 3 year old. She put on her winter jacket, her regular clothes and that to go to Canada's Winter Wonderland from 3pm to 8pm. The material is thin and warm, not bulky. That's why we bought them and they do their job of keeping you warm. She said she feels comfortable all the time. My guess is that fewer layers means less weight and allows you to go longer without needing shoulder rides.
