In May 2015 I bought a pair of black Slogger Garden boots with white polka dots and enjoyed walking through the mud and swamps in them chasing birds for my photos and blog. Just perfect; short enough to get in and out of easily but big enough to keep my feet dry. day after day over the years. until March 2019 when I followed my friend from a shoot in the Wadden Sea. We had cameras with telephoto lenses, he had a tripod and we both had boxes to sit on. Everything was fine with us and we even crossed deep flowing water without any problems. Depth was only about 6-8 inches, but it's still dirt to walk on. He got stuck just behind a small canal. I could see his knee-high boots were more than a foot deep in fetid mud and gray clay. The mud had dried a little and was riddled with deep cracks, but beneath it was disgusting dirt. He dropped the box and balanced on a tripod while I watched. A man walking his two dogs approached and offered to take his camera while he climbed out of the mud. He was only a few meters away from the packed sand/shale and the truck. So. I didn't think it would be a good idea to follow him and turned to go the way I had been walking before. I had to cross a patch of new mud/mud. Even standing on piles of discarded reeds, I began to sink. My boots got harder to pull out of the mud with every step. Using my box in my right hand to steady myself in the mud, I managed to get forward a bit before...I fell face first. BAMM! The camera and lens just hit the ground; I could see drips of dirt on the dials and controls. I got up but was really knee deep in the mud. I stuck the box up my ass and just sat there gasping for air. It seemed nothing was broken but I couldn't understand how they would even save me. By now I could hear my friend and friendly stranger talking and laughing from the other side of the truck. I knew he was outside so I started screaming. And scream. "Help, I need help here!" I couldn't get my slogger boots out of the mud. They were half-height and only the edges of the tops showed in the mud. Finally he heard me and came running with his box. He used it almost like a snowshoe to crawl next to me with his hands. We just sat down to make a plan. By now I had a camera on my lap and we were trying to take off my shoes. It is impossible to bring them forth; You are lost in the mud forever. It was hard enough for me just to stretch my legs. He took my camera and, using the boxes to support our weight, we managed to crawl out onto the dry land. We cleaned up the edge of the bridge a little and used a damp towel from the cafeteria to remove most of the dirt from the camera and lens. and start on that day. So I had to go home with my socks and those boots were history. I ordered another pair in the floral pattern and they arrived quickly. BUT. they just weren't the same. It just didn't feel like ME. So in April I ordered a new pair, exactly the same as the old ones, and the quicksand memories are fading. End.
