FINALLY the answer to the smell of old cigarettes from former tenants! Used EVERYTHING to get rid of the old stench and nothing helped. The owner used a professional device to clean the air and it didn't work. The smell kept coming. Then the air conditioning man told me what the problem was. The vent is lined with insulation and every time smoke is drawn through the vent it saturates that liner. I looked at it with a flashlight and it's black. He told me to get the charcoal filter and put it behind the air conditioner filter flap. I did it and it works! I change it religiously because the charcoal evaporates over time(?). I can't tell you how happy I am with it. Much better than anything I've found at a hardware store. Always keep one handy.
