First, why four stars - because it's not fantastic and takes hours of work to make a great vise for the money and that's why they get four stars instead of three ; Because once you've cleaned it, it's a decent X/Y vise for the money. I took the advice of other reviewers and, before even using it, I took everything apart, cleaning out all of the packaging grease (and, like other reviewers, found that it wasn't). it is not a suitable lubricant, it is just a grease to protect against corrosion). So I took everything apart, wiped and cleaned all the residue, and then filed and sanded all the burrs and roughness. The vise I received wasn't actually that bad. The sliding surfaces were surprisingly smooth and only required deburring at the edges. The threaded rods didn't really need deburring, but there was sawdust and dirt in the threads that washed off easily. Just in case, I lightly polished the internal threads (very tiring), but that probably wasn't necessary, then I cleaned it again. After assembly and relubrication, the adjustment became noticeably softer. An obvious design flaw is that the upper axle has no bracket to hold the end of the threaded rod, so one end of the axle has to be raised slightly by about 2/3 or more of the extension or thread. tie as it is slightly tilted. If they had designed a mount for this end it would have prevented this problem. For the price you can't go wrong, but don't expect driver quality even after cleaning. If you just need a half decent X/Y vise for occasional use I would definitely recommend these as they are good (with some effort) but not great or expensive. If you intend to use it regularly or need something reliably accurate I would spend more money.
