Review on GoPro HERO3+ Black Edition Adventure Camera: Discontinued Originals at Unbeatable Prices! by Oscar Berry

Revainrating 4 out of 5

All in all a fantastic product with a few minor flaws.

I bought a GoPro 3+ Black Edition for a dive I just did. Below are my observations and opinions formed during its use. Pros: * The image quality is excellent. I have not owned any other GoPro cameras but the black version 3+ is fantastic*. A waterproof case is included. It seems strange when you put it in the sea or pool for the first time. Hoping the seal works. Best of all, it returns with underwater video quality far beyond what you can imagine. That's good for 131 feet. If you plan to dive that deep, bring some extra light :) * At 1080p 60fps, fast-paced action (lightning, driving, motorcycling, etc.) is captured in all its glory. * Black Edition has a remote control, $70 extra if you buy it separately * SUPERVIEW! I love it, I almost never turn it off. This is a much more impressive image than without it. * Interval shooting is very useful. I took this on a cruise and used the suction cup to capture sunsets and sunrises from our balcony's glass railing. * Wi-Fi is a great feature. I use it to send a signal to my iPhone so I can see what the camera is seeing and help me set up the frame. I then turn it off (see cons) as this completely drains the battery. The app also allows you to view (in lower quality) the videos and photos currently on your GoPro card. You can even delete them if you want. The remote also works over WiFi, which is a shame. It seems to me that for the remote control it would be better to use a battery if they used Bluetooth (although it requires a different radio). * The number of attachments available for the GoPro line of cameras is amazing. You can set this to anything as long as you are prepared. I should also note that every accessory, both OEM and AEM, is reasonably priced and the ones I've bought are of good quality. This is something to consider when considering competitor GoPro cameras (Sony, Rollei, Polaroid, etc.).* Mini-USB charging, no proprietary chargers (hallelujah!), although remote control has its own Charger features.* Micro USB some might think it's a con, but most of them come with a SD converter card, so I consider that a PRO.* Quality construction. The camera is solidly built.* Ultra wide angle, I think it's a little over 170 degrees, useless 15 FPS. It's just so they can say "4K". I suspect the Hero 4 will include 4K at 30fps. Until then, don't be fooled into thinking 4K is a useful feature.* The battery life is terrible. I understand this is noticeably better than Hero 3, but it's still a shame. Batteries were changed 3 times a day with average use of video and time lapse. I was constantly worried about when to start slow-mo so I wouldn't run out of battery before I wanted to. You will hardly get more than 2 hours on a NEW battery. This may surprise many, so get ready to juggle batteries before you go.* The interface for changing settings takes a little getting used to. It really only has two buttons for you to play around with. So when you try to make changes, you'll find yourself scrolling over and over the list of options and accidentally clicking past the one you want. The smartphone app helps to solve this problem.* I accidentally snapped photos when trying to shoot a video, or vice versa. to skip some frames because it's still on Wi-Fi menu off or burst mode instead of video. A guy I was with lost all of his videos because his camera didn't close completely from the settings menu. She never recorded when he touched the record button. Such a shame. I wish GoPro would add a double tap feature so it would fall out of the menu it's in and start videos etc.* The remote and smartphone are awkward to pair with the GoPro every time. You need to turn on Wi-Fi on the camera, tell your phone to use the GoPro's Wi-Fi signal, open the app, and tell it to control the camera. Seems easy until you realize each of these steps takes time for the camera to capture the moment. Final comments: I like this thing. In no way does it replace the best features of a DSLR, but serves a completely different purpose. If you want to capture a unique perspective while having fun, you should try GoPro. And with that, I would go for the black version. The Superview alone is worth the price difference between the versions. Just get ready with extra batteries charged.

Pros
  • Sports & Action Camcorders
Cons
  • I vaguely remember
