The smaller one perfectly holds a three pound sack of flour, which is why I bought it. :) The larger one should hold 5 pounds. The lids close fairly tightly with a latch for easy locking/opening, but if you lift by the lid it may pop out. Do not lift by the lid. These were the best containers I've found around here for the price.
