Charging cables should not get hot - why is that?

I used this cable for the first time today and noticed that the part that connects to the iPad gets very hot. Not warm. hot. If the cable wears out after a few years, I'm fine with that, but I don't want this thing damaging an expensive iPad's charging port. Considering a return, this is a problem.
