I recently had back surgery (laminectomy for sciatic nerve pain due to spinal stenosis). In the weeks after the operation, lying in bed in any position was so painful that I woke up several times during the night (No. 8 on the pain scale). I could not sleep because of the residual pain in my lumbosacral region. Most nights, from 2 a.m. to 4 a.m., I had to exhaust myself by reading or watching TV in a straight-backed chair or walking around the house (walking was therapeutic). I tried a homemade wedge of stacked pillows, but for some reason that didn't work. After using this wedge the first night I was able to sleep for several hours at a time. I wake up a few hours later but the pain is very mild (#3 on the pain scale). Now when I wake up, I stay comfortably in bed and watch TV until I fall asleep again. The pillow allows me to travel, especially to visit family, without worrying about waking up others late at night and early in the morning because of my oddities.
