I bought these pants mainly for travel and work as they are lightweight and can be converted into shorts. Zipper pockets are good for preventing things from falling out. I like the fact that there is a special strap and button on the bottom of the legs that allows you to raise the leg, which I think will be good for hiking. They also have velcro at the very bottom to pull them around the leg if needed. I think the black color looks pretty nice and they serve me well as dress pants which was my main reason for buying them. The fabric used is very comfortable to the touch and comfortable to the touch. On warm days I turn them into shorts and it works really well. The lower part of the legs is attached and detached, which only takes about a minute. Overall I was happy with these pants/shorts.
