UPDATE: I have to knock this off with a different star. The reason for this is that after a few months the four screws that attach the chair seats to the frame fell out. These are long, sharp screws that are not meant to be near children and one of my children almost stepped on one. This is because the bolts don't go into the seats enough that with enough pressure (you know what kids do) they actually pop out. They had to be constructed with insert nuts and mounting screws or bolts. Please be careful. ORIGINAL REVIEW: I confess that this table and chair set looks attractive. Classic design, solid wood, convenient storage, reversible tabletop with built-in Lego compatible base, what's not to love? It turns out quite a bit. I've assembled a lot of furniture in my life and I can honestly say it took a lot longer than it should have because the instructions, while not of poor quality, often don't indicate important things to consider when assembling . Some of the other reviews have mentioned inappropriate parts but I have to say that doesn't apply to me - all the right parts needed for a solid build were included. The only problem is that it requires tedious assembly (which is just ridiculous) and poor instructions are very error prone. It still took about the recommended 30 minutes, but it was a mean half hour. It was packaged well, but the paint was still flaking when it was delivered. Luckily there was nothing in very noticeable places, no split wood or other structural issues. As for the finished structure, the material is generally good. However, there are some interesting use cases for lower quality wood (drawers and chair supports) where more stress can occur. I'm not surprised by other reviews mentioning a slight breakage. In terms of functionality, the parts feel solid and sturdy (drawers aside). The chairs are well proportioned and can easily be moved around if required. The corners are rounded enough to avoid serious injury, but it's still a heavy wood set. The finish of the worktop is also good and it has been very easy to clean so far. But there's one huge issue that I'm surprised nobody mentions: legroom. With fabric drawers, there is less than two (2) inches of legroom when the chairs slide inward. Even children don't have such proportions, which seems like a ridiculous omission on the part of the manufacturer. And even though it's fabric, the drawers aren't soft and pliable due to the inserts, so you can't really fit inside. Despite the extra felt pads on the legs, my daughter gets nervous every time she tries to climb in and the only solution is to open the drawers and sit on the adjacent sides. We could take the drawers out forever, but that's no easy maneuver (as you'll learn upon reassembly) and defeats some of the intended functionality. I really wanted to like this table and chairs. We'll be reluctant to keep it as it has some good qualities, but they don't live up to it, and I'd recommend keeping looking for anyone in doubt about buying it.
