I have found that my iPad 3 is sometimes dark or even dead. I can't even turn it off by pressing the buttons. It will automatically recover after a while. By removing it from the iPad and sliding the lid over the screen, I was able to replicate these issues. So the magnet in the lid was the cause of the problem.
