The microphone is below the jack.
The microphone is located under the headphone jack. My state recently made it illegal to use a phone while driving, so I only use one of the headphones to take calls, not music. Since I only use one, I'd rather have the mic on the cable I'm using so the answer button is closer to my mouth and not under the junctions of the cables. Also, they seem to work well and are good value for money.
