Some realistic observations

Around 2005-2010, when Bluetooth mini speakers were the new toy everyone wanted (and you paid the price for being a pioneer), I was really infatuated and couldn't look any further the perfect one. As a result I had more than most dealers, speakers of all shapes and sizes and gimmicks. Some of them were impressive, including ones so small I could put them in my carry-on when I was traveling to listen to music in my hotel rooms. From the big brands there are only a few pieces nowadays. One that caught my attention was this series from Cambridge SoundWorks, a company I've known and loved since working directly with their founder, Henry Kloss, in the late '80s and early '90s. Unlike the first mini Bluetooth speakers, this little speaker only costs nineteen dollars, probably the lowest price I've ever paid for a speaker. I had mixed expectations. But I chose it for both its size and its shape. I was looking for a small personal speaker to place on the base of my desktop monitor so I could listen to content at low volumes without having to use my premium Boston Acoustics speaker system. The small size is really impressive, as is the speaker's surprisingly pleasing appearance. It's heavier than similar no-name speakers and one has to wonder how they're selling it for such a low price. It comes with a micro USB charging cable as well as a mini audio cable. The power button is easily accessible at the top rear of the speaker, which is also where the audio input and charging port are located behind a rubber stopper. The rest of the controls are on the right side of the wedge. The speaker connects easily to new Bluetooth devices, but doesn't appear to be 100% compatible with all of the numerous standards. For example, it cannot connect to my desktop computer without downloading an updated Bluetooth driver. The most important thing you probably want to know is how it sounds. I'm sorry to say I've already written nearly 20,000 reviews, many of which have been spirited, and I'm not that impressed. I've definitely heard better from similarly sized and even smaller speakers. It's good but not impressive. And it's definitely not the sort of speaker you'd choose if you have more than one or two listeners, or for outdoor use. Doesn't automatically turn off after a few minutes like many other brands do, but turns off after 15 minutes of inactivity when used in Bluetooth mode. Interestingly, when you plug it into an Echo device, battery mode keeps the power on all the time, so you'll probably want to keep it plugged into a power source if that's your plan. I also like that you only hear the pairing sound once. for the first time, unlike many other brands that make a loud noise when powered on or successful pairing. To me that is a breach of contract.

Pros
  • Quality construction
Cons
  • Hard to say
