This technically works if you solder the components yourself.
Good thing I'm not afraid to solder SMD, otherwise it would be cheating. In trying to troubleshoot the connection, I found that all but one of the mini HDMI connector's pins was missing enough solder on the pads to make a proper connection. I had no intention of buying a DIY kit.
