I gave this to my son for his first birthday and he LOVES it. The pins don't retract which is one of the main reasons I bought this thing. The last thing I want is to step on another stupid toy thing. The pegs, top and sides are made of wood, while the bottom is made of plastic. The plastic is like a swing at the bottom so the pins pop out when you hit it with a hammer. The hammer is made of wood, so even if the crumb isn't strong enough to hit hard, the hammer will do some of the work. BUT. A warning to any parent of a toddler like mine that will bang everything together, the hammer also hits the mirror very well and makes horrific promises of one day breaking it into a million pieces.
