Not smooth: tripod heads
If you are using this to attach your DSLR for deep sky photography I would NOT recommend it. When tightened, it tends to move in a random direction and needs to be fixed until it is in the right position. I can be pretty painful trying to get something in a 400mm frame. That would be good for wide-angle shots.
