If your child is small for his age, he will be fine. My granddaughter is 3.5 years old and her cap is constantly pulled up because she is too small. I think that the size description should not indicate the age of 4-7 years. More like 2-3 if your child is not small than fits, maybe up to 4 years. This is quite a warm set. The mittens were also small.
