Well I assumed "eco-friendly" meant something like chipboard, maybe recycled, but it's more like a very thick one Billboard with foam core. As I assembled it, I thought of those intertwined foam mats you see in kindergarten. Unlike previous reviewers, the company has gone from push tabs to actual screws (requires a small Phillips head), which feels ridiculous because you're literally screwing into soft foam. It is very light and the shelves are only held together by locking tabs. So be careful what you keep on it. I was looking for a shelf with very specific dimensions and in white. It's cute and easy to put together, but I'm not thrilled with the material it's made of.
