Review on πŸ“· Black Olympus E-P5 16.1MP Mirrorless Digital Camera with 3-Inch LCD - Body Only by Jordan Jackson

Revainrating 4 out of 5

fantastic little camera

Firstly, this camera is probably not for those who want to "point and shoot". While it can be used in this way with excellent results, there are much more economical and suitable point and shoot cameras out there like the Panasonic gm1, gm5 and gf7. I bought this camera as a replacement. for the broken olympus omd em5. I also bought a VF-4. I prefer the rangefinder style and find the bump on the em5 intrusive. Also, this camera has a faster top shutter - 1/8000 - which allows you to shoot wide open in daylight. Neither em10 nor em5 have this. The VF-4 is also significantly better than the EVF of the OMD Twins. Image Quality: People argue about Micro 43 versus APS. I am very pleased with the images from this particular sensor. I shoot raw and cannot annotate JPEG. I get very good images with minimal noise at ISO 3200. These images are comparable to those I get from my Fuji X100. I'm not a pixel watcher. The bottom line for me is that the benefit of the Micro 43's size is measurable (some APS bodies can be about the same size, but equivalent APS lenses are slightly larger). and speaking of lenses, the choice for the m43 is phenomenal. Large selection, high quality and low prices. The speed is amazing. This DSLR camera is fast. The fold-down touch screen is an extremely useful tool. Any serious camera should have this feature. The structure and controls are great. I like the "Double Dial" operation. The camera just feels good and looks great. The menu is complicated but due to omd I've already settled in. super control panel key or 'scp'. Once that's set, just click "OK" and all the secondary features are available - focus type, metering, drive, flash settings, ISO, etc. - for easy customization. The built-in flash is great. A flash isn't necessary in dark conditions with a fast lens, but I often use fill flash on sunny/shady days. I missed the built in flash on omd. This is very good and its output is easy to customize on the fly with scp. My biggest complaint about the camera is the lack of a built-in viewfinder. the pluggable vf4 electronic viewfinder is great, and i also find it convenient to write on the flip-up screen in many cases. but simply imagining an EVF as a plug-in accessory is not an elegant or ideal solution. Bottom line, a camera of this size and price should have a built-in electronic viewfinder - Sony does it, Fuji does it, Panasonic does it. heck, my old film pen f from circa 1968 is about the same size and even has a clear viewfinder. Olympus, you absolutely must take it with you. The Micro 43 is a great system for many purposes and the ep5 is the best Micro 43 camera for me. However, the price is high for what it is and the lack of a built-in electronic viewfinder is unfortunate.

Pros
  • Like everything before
Cons
  • Definitely bad product
