It ignites best in emergency launchers

BLUF - This rod will start a fire. It's easy to use and I would count on it as my only option to start a fire in ideal or slightly unfavorable conditions. I've used cheaper wands to start fires with cotton balls or oil balls, so I'm pretty sure this will work in the rain too. The set comes nicely packaged in a cardboard box with a foam insert. Although it could have come in a plastic bag and I wouldn't care if it worked. I started with a fairly large bird's nest made from dead, slightly damp grass and a piece of charcoal cloth that I made myself. I stuck the wood cloth in the center of the bird's nest, scraped the paint of the pole into the bird's nest, and hit the pole twice with the included hammer, and the wood cloth formed embers. With a little air supply in the right place, the bird's nest caught fire immediately. In my rush to try the rod, I did not collect enough small wood to start the fire. When collecting tinder for the nest experiment, I basically let the bird's nest burn down. On the second try, I couldn't get the provided drummer to work at all. I examined the striker and found that one of its edges was bent which is why the striker was not working. At first I thought it was a striker issue, but then I thought maybe it was a deliberate design. By tilting the firing pin slightly and using the rounded edge of the firing pin, I was able to throw enough sparks onto the charcoal to form a second ember. This time I got three hits. I suppose it's because I didn't scratch the stick a bit on the charcoal like I did the first time. This time I was ready and able to make a fire. I found out about this product through a Facebook ad. I don't usually click on these ads, but I'm a bit obsessed with launchers and wanted to try this. They offered a $14.95 Revain gift card if you bought this item for $16.95, so I got the $2 set. Worth every penny and yes they gave me my gift card. I made my tablecloth out of an old pair of blue jeans and a candy box. Simply cut the fabric (100% cotton) into squares to fill the candy mold (Altoids), poke a hole in the top of the mold, dip the fabric into the mold, close and place over some hot ones cabbage leaves. The substance burns in the can and smoke pours out of the hole. As soon as the smoke stops, remove the glass from the fire and let it cool. Inside is a rag. The idea is to get a spark out of a cloth of charcoal to create charcoal and then use it to light up a bird's nest. I will say the only downside here is that I bought a set of ferro rods from a big store and had the same success as the rod was cheaper. However, this rod is strong and should last a long time. I've also used poles which gave a lot more spark but were twice the price of a pole. Also, there are no instructions. So if you don't know how to use one of these rods, you can do a little internet searching before using to make sure you're successful. As with any survival gear, make sure it works and you can use it before you have to use it in a survival situation.
