this thing just amazed me! I had pretty low expectations for this device. In fact, I felt like this might affect the sound of my setup. Even with standard lamps, I was very surprised by the sound. I later tried a few G&E tubes but couldn't tell for sure if there was a difference (both sound great). My desktop stereo setup consists of a Steinberg UR12 audio interface and PreSonus Eris 3.5 powered speakers, which I had before adding this tube preamp. I used to love the sound, but now I'm completely addicted to music, just like I was when I was a teenager. I'll admit that in many ways the difference in sound was negligible, and in others it was huge. The soundstage is much larger with a 3D effect that's stunning on good recordings and barely noticeable on bad ones. I don't mean the format (I stream my music at 320kbps), I mean the quality of the actual studio/master. Another thing I noticed is that the high frequencies have a lot more detail and texture, although they're actually a lot less fatiguing. The more natural sound allows me to play music at an absolutely absurd volume without disturbing me. The louder the sound, the more detailed and smooth the sound becomes. I know there is a lot of conflicting information about different types of audio equipment and it's difficult to describe the sound in words. That was the main reason for purchasing this item. I wanted to experiment and see if the "tube sound" folks were right. I have no skin in it, I'm just a person who loves music and doesn't care how it gets to my ears. As long as the music sounds good and I don't have to sell a kidney, I'm happy! If this review helps someone find a new appreciation and love for music like I have, then that's good and that's why I'm taking the time to correct it. I'll add a few quibbles that I have. Build quality is excellent overall, with the exception of the volume knob. The large volume knob is slightly off-center and feels a bit blurry. It feels solid but not stiff and smooth like a high-end product. Oddly enough, the bass and treble controls feel really good! I'd like to take these minor flaws for some of the poorly soldered circuit boards shown (or worse, not shown) in similar devices I've reviewed. Another small choice, why red LEDs? The tubes themselves have a nice faint glow, why do almost all of these cheap tube preamps do that? The same goes for the power supply, just use white, it looks much more stylish than bright colored LEDs. Finally, a bypass switch would be nice, but not that important. Despite the minor flaws described above, this thing has given me more musical enjoyment than any other device I've ever bought. And that's amazing considering it's also one of the cheapest!
