Review on πŸ–¨οΈ Optimized Classroom Printer Leveling Footprint by Monoprice by Trey Michaels

Significant customization required but reliable entry-level 3D printer

Out of the box, this printer required extensive setup, including reinstalling the printhead assembly on the bottom rail, manually adjusting the Z-axis screw to allow the printhead to reach the platform, and lowering the proximity sensor. None of these settings are documented, but given the printer's simple design, they were pretty basic. However, it's not exactly a basic printer due to the enclosed build area, so be prepared for some frustration and oddly angled screwdrivers. In terms of firmware, this device is identical to Weeboo TINA2, which has more recent updated firmware and improved interfaces. I had a Pi3 so I installed Octoprint to manage my prints (after migrating the firmware) with a few issues. I'm also planning to cut the printhead cover for easy access and video recording, but I'll have to leave the left side in place as it also interacts with the Z-axis top limit switch. The software basically doesn't work. It uses a regular ESP device which you can program yourself if you wish, but personally I don't have the C++ and serial port knowledge to do so. Overall I may not be the target buyer for this product but I have been able to modify and customize it to work as a more advanced small form factor printer. Documentation and community support are mostly lacking, but if you're into a hobby or need a small device, I'd recommend this printer.

Pros
  • Compact: Its small size makes it ideal for the desktop, office, dorm or classroom.
Cons
  • There are other interesting options.
