My dog (I hate to show his photo publicly) lay on the mat during our heat, he stayed on the mat longer than expected. I recommend choosing a size larger than your pet's size as it will move and stretch. I used to buy the style you put in the freezer but it's too hard for a dog to enjoy. This rug is cool but not cold. I plan to put a pad on thin ice packs during these hot days.
