I bought these (bought 2 four-packs) for emergency lighting in cases of power outages in my all electric home. I have stored them in lots of convenient places (kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, den, guest room) with the batteries (the batteries are not included so I bought enough rechargeables so I had them for all of them) in bags but not inside of them. This way the batteries will be fresh when I put them in when I need them. The light they provide is enough that I feel safe and "not in the dark" when I use them.
