We love these inserts. We use them not only on the changing mat, but also on the bed, the floor, etc. - wherever we change our daughter's diaper. They saved us from washing the bedspread too often or steam cleaning the carpet! In fact, this is one of the best purchases we've made. Now the instructions say to wash in cold water on a gentle cycle. But not us. We wash them in lukewarm to hot water and they've been fine (and in fact, if you've washed them on the gentle cycle after they shit, the stain won't go away - I've tried). We try not to dry them (nor should you), but we've had them a few times and they've been fine. We are on our second pack now and will no doubt be getting more at some point. I will say the ones in the first pack were a bit rougher than the ones in the second pack and seemed to curl more easily. Maybe they changed the design. However, we were happy with both packages and highly recommend the product.
