Review on Rii i8X Mini Wireless Keyboard with Touchpad Mouse – Portable, Backlit, Rechargeable Li-ion Battery, 2.4GHz by Gabe Ries

Good and different. But better?

I have 3 previous model keyboards from Ria (2 - 2.4 RF and 1 - Bluetooth). I love her! They have virtually no lag and the rubbery feel makes them a pleasure to use. (By the way, I use them on different computers with Win7/8.1). It was beneficial and I decided to try it mainly because of the scroll wheel, which I miss when using older models. Pros: The backlight is different as it illuminates not just the characters but the entire key. Alternative button functions are also highlighted. The scroll wheel is fine, but I use Logitech mice with adaptive scrolling, so I'm spoiled. The keys are larger and better spaced, having tripled the F keys as alternate function keys with number keys, and more alternate characters using the same keys. Currently. Cons: Triple-pressing some F/Alt character keys results in more double checks and errors when attempting to perform more complex key combinations. They removed the mouse buttons on the left and the Page-U/Down keys on the right. The mouse buttons next to the (larger) touchpad are above it, making them (to me) less useful. The directional wheel (?) is more like a directional pad than 4-5 separate buttons and tends to register a false click. Especially the OK button. I prefer separate Del/Backspace keys; here they are combined into one. The final downside is that it now feels like a hard plastic that slips. I'm not saying it's a bad keyboard, as a scroll wheel and better backlight are obvious improvements, and as usual, the Rii has the lowest lag of any of these mini-keyboards. It's more like "try it and see if it works for you".

Pros
  • Finally bought
Cons
  • Sad hardware
