I got this because my two cats use the tray to throw their trash all over the room. It lands on the floor, on the dressers and worst of all on our BED. I don't like sand. It's safe and rugged, and it goes anywhere. And the waste is the same as sand. We have a cheap standard cat litter mat. It didn't work and my little cat tore it to shreds. I bought it because it looked very heavy in the photos. I wanted a rug that could withstand the onslaught of my little cat. It's not really "hard work". The mat is rubbery and flexible BUT it's probably strong enough to withstand normal use by a regular cat. The various holes in the mat are great for catching dirt. After I installed it, there was almost not a single grain of dirt left on the outside of the mat. I was actually very happy with that. Until night came. My little cat tore it up too. It took him several nights but about half of him was torn to pieces before I gave up and got rid of him. After that I bought a $5 rug from Home Depot. Very durable so my little cat can't rip it apart and the design catches dirt just as well. If you have a cute, petite cat, this could be perfect for you. But for me (and my jerk cat) it just didn't work.
