The leash D-ring broke when our 16 pound dachshund jumped overboard while swimming. The D-ring band failed immediately. Having just bought a boat we haven't installed a net on our lifebelt yet, so we attached a leash to the D-ring to give our dog a secure hold while cruising. Fortunately, our dog is a very good swimmer, but we put a life jacket on her to be on the safe side. We were able to perform a quick "man (dog) overboard" maneuver to get her back on board, but if conditions weren't so good we might have lost her. Very poor quality control of the strap attachment. Since the dog is only 16 pounds, I was expecting the D-rings to provide some level of support. I'm assuming the D-ring is sewn to the life jacket so it can be detached with very little effort. Please check the integrity of your D-rings after purchasing this item. You can simply attach your leash to your vest's D-ring and have someone pull on your life jacket while you hold the leash. Make sure you're pulling with at least the same force as your dog's weight. If we attempted this test, the D-ring would not work in the security of our home, not in an emergency.
