It did not become smooth over time, apparently from the heat.
Unlike other large mouse pads, this one didn't straighten up after a day or so. Otherwise the product appears to be as described but I suspect it has been rolled and shredded for some time stored at high temperatures. As a result, the rubber pad is constantly deformed. If they can't improve their quality control, don't try to save $2 or $3, spend a little more on other great mouse pads with more reviews.
