Turn around and see. Below the valve mechanism to the tank seal/flange is a secondary chamber (large enough to reach under). I have no idea how a person keeps it clean because between the top bowl and the bottom of the toilet bowl. In this (lower chamber) you can scatter waste (of all kinds) without going into the tank. And the valve cord is not watertight in case that chamber floods, or to prevent stray "liquids" from escaping through the valve to the floor in front of the toilet. I suppose it's possible to flush the main bowl (top) and then use a small water spray head to get to the open drain valve (while it's running of course) and flush the lower chamber. Just not a very hygienic design in my opinion. I contacted Thetford to see if they sell a toilet like the old Thetford I have, with a bowl-to-cistern spout without that huge secondary (uncleanable, possibly leaking) bowl.
