This is a great alternative to cutting out a shelf, finishing it off and using visible brackets or support blocks. I wanted my gym corner to look clean and the laminate surface to be very nice. The small cutout in the back corner was perfect for my previously installed cable camouflage duct. Warning: You must be sufficiently forgiving and have additional equipment on hand if you wish to reinforce the mounts on this unit to support the full rated weight. You should have a drill/screwdriver, spirit level, tape measure, and additional gear, which I would recommend for any project like this. Otherwise, the included equipment is suitable for bells and whistles or light work. The shelf is made from thick Masonite fiberboard with a textured laminate on a wooden frame. The cavities at the back of the shelf allow for the placement of support blocks that attach to the drywall with the included butterfly anchors (2 on each side). I used an extra anchor for each block. There is a small gap between the size of the blocks and the rear holes that the shelf inserts into to allow for user error in aligning the supports, which is not ideal for tight mounting. I have found that the paint stirrers (I always keep them for spacers etc.) fit perfectly without cutting and fit perfectly into the shelf blocks and hold them in place for the next step. Instead of using a small shelf to block the included mounting screws, I used short 7/8" drywall screws at the top and bottom of the shelf for extra strength. They are perfectly recessed and invisible. The final assembly is capable of holding a fairly heavy speaker in a corner for my TV. As someone who enjoys building many things from scratch, I appreciate the time and energy saved by spending a modest amount of money on a beautifully finished product. By the way, if you need detailed instructions to figure out how to install this shelf, you might be better off calling a handyman.
