First a short story. We live in Massachusetts and our yard borders wooded swamps. It seems we live in a den for the entire mosquito population in the Northeast Corridor! In every summer season, our pool and garden are practically unusable due to the large number of biting insects (mostly skeeters). A few years ago I bought a Mosquito Magnet Liberty (the best cordless car that cost about $700), MM's work that converts propane to CO2 and uses an octonol attractant and a fan to suck the bastards into the trap. It seems to have caught a few mosquitoes but not as many as I expected and it made no noticeable difference in our gardening enjoyment. It broke after the first season and after a small issue with customer service they sent me a replacement head unit, it worked for a while and then it seemed to stop working again. I decided to do more research and ended up buying a Mega Catch unit (works with headlights, octonol, fan). This device also delivered only mediocre results. The block broke down after season 2, they sent me a new fanboard but it never worked as it was a bit of a hassle to take apart and put back together. So this season I didn't have a single piece of equipment going and we couldn't be outside at all. After further research I settled on the Skeetervac SV5100. This device appears to combine technology from both of the other devices (light, propane > CO2, Octonol PLUS that sticky paper fly wrap that sticks some bugs to it for extra mobility) and wireless! I ordered next day delivery of the device through my Prime account and it was at my doorstep the next day. Setup was very easy and took about 10 minutes. I hooked up a new propane tank and followed the startup instructions. I will note that they say you will know the device has started by hearing a popping sound as the "engine" starts. I didn't hear this noise and wasn't sure at first if the unit was really working properly, but went over to test it after about 20 minutes and the light turned green as promised and I could hear the fan running. It was the evening of June 27th. Blue Rhino says you need to give it 4-6 weeks to see it really start working. 1 week later I went to the block to check the progress. Mosquitoes swarmed around the block and the sticky paper was about 85% covered with bugs. Then I pulled out the drip tray and was amazed! It was full of mosquitoes. I mean I threw it away and it was literally a solid "brick" of dead mosquitoes! It is now July 10th, just about 2 weeks since I started the device and 1 week since emptying the trap and replacing the sticky paper. AGAIN holy S*%*! So many mosquitoes on the potholder, or more, and the tray with the trap was completely filled with mosquitoes again! I will try to upload some photos of my week 1 and week 2 results. This machine WORKS! The best of the three technologies I have tried and I am completely satisfied with the product and the results. We've been spending a lot of time around the yard lately and of course there are a few pesky bloodsuckers but a total day/night difference compared to before. We have our yard back! Thanks Blue Rhino! PS: I ordered an additional Octonol attractant cartridge and a spare set of Tack Strips with the device. I will have to order more tape as I just installed my third and last one today - which is good as it means it fills up with dead mosquitoes. Be sure to order at least one replacement kit when purchasing the device.
