All Data Lost: Computers & Accessories

I bought it just under a year ago and as a teacher I store ALL my work files on it - literally all my study material since about 2003. About a week ago I couldn't access any of my files. I took it to the website to see if they could fix it - to no avail. I then contacted Silicon Power (via Facebook Messenger). I was able to mail it to them (pay postage myself). When Silicon Power contacted me they said the drive was defective and they could not recover my data. I bought a 2 year data recovery policy. After a few returns, I am now getting the drive back so I can send it to a data recovery company. However, there is no guarantee that they can recover my data. Even if I return my failed drive (to send it to a data recovery center), I cannot get a warranty replacement from Silicon Power. All in all, there were some strange things I learned dealing with this company. It was difficult at first to get them to send me my failed hard drive. They demanded that I call the insurance company first (although I still don't understand why they took my hard drive hostage in the first place). They gave me a phone number that no one answered, but they voluntarily called me back. However, what irritates me most is their reluctance to provide a replacement when my drive is still under warranty, especially when Silicon Power was unable to recover the data and admitted the drive was not working. I mean. What good is "durable", "waterproof" and "military-grade shockproof" if my data is gone? What good is a three-year guarantee if it's not really valid? In general, I wouldn't be such an idiot as I am; I would have a second backup. I wouldn't buy from Silicon Power either.
