Sizes naturally run small

Update 10/22/21: I wore them on a weekend hike when the weather was below 50 degrees most of the time which was a bit hot for them. It was quite windy (25mph) and they seemed to block the wind well. It was supposed to rain, but it didn't rain during the day so I didn't have time to check the water resistance. However, they do NOT breathe at all and as a result, my feet got wet and wet from the inside. They wouldn't be warm enough for snow as a single layer, but windy beach weather in the 50's was warm enough. I'll look for something else as I won't be wearing them very often. The main reason is the lack of decent pockets. The two front pockets are very small. My Galaxy S9+ was almost too big to just close the left pocket. I have a small metal wallet and car and house keys that fit in another pocket that zips closed, but I also attach my knife to the pocket so I was afraid the keys and wallet would fall out would. Original: First impression just to try them is that they are definitely on the small side. I usually wear a 38-40 waist so I ordered XL. The waist is not adjustable, only elastic on both sides. I barely start stretching my waist. The problem is that the hips are a bit tight and I don't have big hips. I'll try them out as they seem flexible and definitely feel warm.
