I am an ophthalmologist and also one of the most severe dry eye sufferers. This is by far the best way I've found to warm up the meibomian glands at home (google meibomian glands and click on the images). The goal is to heat the Meibomian glands so the oils can flow better. I use the heat mask 20 minutes before bed and also right after waking up. It takes about 8 minutes for the unit to fully warm up, so I turn on early to get it ready at night. After putting the mask on, I take my pinky finger with light to moderate force, press and "wiggle" it across the upper and lower eyelids. This helps stimulate and push some of the oil from the glands onto the eyes. Prior to this product, I microwaved the "whisky stones” for about 1.5 minutes, wrapped the stones in a hot rag, let them cool for a second, and placed them on my eyes. Now I get a strong warmth in my eyes when I'm lying in bed with less effort. In the evening I listen to an audio book for 20 minutes. It's so soothing after my eyes have been burning all day that I often fall asleep very quickly and have to set my alarm 20 minutes late. I am so thankful for this product. I tell all my dry eye patients about this device. I've been on expensive dry eye treatments like Lipiflow which haven't helped me much. If you can find a doctor who uses an LLLT mask and practices "meibomian gland expression," this is your next best bet to help your dry eyes. Prescription medications like Restasis or Xiidra can help. Ultimately, all dry eye treatments and remedies are trial and error to see what works for you. I heard that another patient had great success using Thera-tears Sterilid Foam Eyelid Cleaner. Cleaning the eyelids, where the meibomian glands open, is important for getting oils into the eyes; Check out some pictures of meibomian glands on google. I hope this device and information helps!
