I bought this charger for my Surface Book 1 exactly 90 days ago, received it and started using it using it 88 days ago. I take great care of my cables and electronics in general (force of habit after five years in the electronics industry). So I couldn't believe when this cable, while plugged in and charging my laptop without moving it or interacting with it in any way, suddenly, for lack of a better word, exploded. It was a small explosion because it is a small string, but there was a very loud bang and a bright flash, followed for a moment by a small puff of smoke. To be honest I was very lucky not to be hurt as my foot was less than two inches from where the incident happened on the line. On inspection it looks like it was somewhere in the last few days (I know it wasn't before because the weekend before last I was out with my laptop and I always took a quick peek at the power cord when I got it assembled and fastened) Half of the cord that plugs into an outlet (or surge protector in my case) and goes to a plug that fits into a port on the power supply at the other end was defective. The thick black plastic protecting the internal wires has pulled back about a quarter of an inch where the cable itself meets the connector that connects to the power supply, revealing two wires, one blue and one brown. The brown wire is dark brown, it looks like the wire caused a short circuit and a small explosion. I'm thankful I didn't suffer burns or electrocution, which could have happened, and that there was nothing flammable in the blast radius. In the worst case, I could seriously injure myself or lose my home. I've been perfectly happy with this cable for the past 87 days, and today I'm just glad nothing but the cable itself was destroyed (despite surge protection, a short circuit did shut off the electricity in the house, but it was nothing that caused the jamming the backup didn't help and luckily my laptop wasn't damaged). The price of this cable was decent - assuming it works and doesn't pose a major safety hazard - but I would think long and hard about how much it would cost you to prevent an electrical fire and possible catastrophic consequences. Personally, I bought a much more expensive cable a few minutes ago to replace this one. I hope that production and safety standards will be higher. I'm willing to pay for something that doesn't cripple me or burn my house down.
