Not worth the price

TL;DR: Not worth the $25 I paid when the ink smeared, 4 out of 6 nibs didn't write smoothly and the holders gave me trouble. Came back for another set. An aspiring calligrapher wanted this set to draw text for Inktober. This is the first dip stick I've used. Please accept this review for the adult beginner that I am. First, the packaging is really nice. Everything is nicely packaged, the packaging would make a great gift. I only tried springs in the main area and not in the second, looser set. I washed the feathers with soft toothpaste and a toothbrush as directed to remove the grease. The nib holder in the brown pen (the metal ring that holds the nib in place) slipped out of the wood after half a dozen nib changes. The pen could not be fully fixed due to the twisted handle. I didn't bother with the black holder. Of the 6 nibs I tried, 2 worked well - the main nib that goes into the holder and #3. The inks and pens I tested are shown in the photos. Black ink in particular did not flow well. I had problems with some black feathers. The red left an initial mess but otherwise seemed to flow smoothly. I don't know if this is (probably) user error, but I had a hard time with ink being very patchy on the first few strokes after dipping the pen into the ink. The photos show when I ran out of ink.

Pros
  • Everything is fine!
Cons
  • Expensive
