We moved to Missouri last year and it was our first full summer here. Roscoe has been raised in the high mountains of CO since he was 8 weeks old (he is now 2 years old) so this intense combination of heat and humidity has been tough on him. MO has very high humidity days (90-100%) so I wasn't sure how well a cooling vest would work. We decided to bite the financial bullet and give it a try and overall we're very happy with it! There's a learning curve in getting the most out of it, and you'll need to try multiple ways before you get the right result. We ordered medium. Roscoe weighs about 50 pounds and is 22 inches tall at the shoulder. He is a Cattle Dog/Australian/Rottie/German Shepherd/Border Collie/Rat Terrier/Supermatt Husky. It has a smooth double coat with long black fur. His fur is very thick on his neck and he has a broad chest for his size. This vest definitely kept his ass from overheating several times during the worst time of the summer. He accompanies me to the yard when I work with the horses and sometimes on very hot days we stay outside longer than we would like if the horses come out or something breaks. This vest is not "magical" in any way, but it did allow him to lie in the shade and wear regular pants instead of the excessive overheating of his pants, which he did. Keeping him inside was literally torture for him, so the fact that he could be with me saved his psyche and ours! He's not the biggest fan of vest restrictions. He is a herding dog and very active. He will literally drive himself to his death just to enjoy the thrill of the chase. It runs away from us when we try to put it on. He knows it's cool, although we stripped him down and put him in the back seat of the car just to see him laying right on top of him. Treats were the best way to get him to take the vest. This dog also needs plenty of positive rewards for any form of grooming, so he's a bit touchy! The vest works when there is airflow in it. So when your dog lies on the vest, it is no longer cool outside. the part on which they are lying, until air enters again. Of course he's so active that this vest is perfect for him, except the shoulder/neck area is too thick for a guy with fur around his neck like Roscoe. A plus size would definitely be too big for his body, but I just wish the medium size allowed for a little more movement in the shoulder area. Also, he got this thing through the phone call in just a few months. It broke one of the clips (we put it back together) and it's not that bright silver no matter how many times you wash it. He's still doing his job and we figured if it only lasts one summer it might be worth getting the money back for him because he's been really protective of him during those really hot days. It also keeps thorns from sticking to his fur as he walks across the grass! In general, for a black fluffy dog, it is worth buying!
