My large German Shepherd and small aging terrier have been on a raw diet for a number of years and I have been pleased with their health benefits and energy levels. Recently, however, my 16+ year old terrier has been refusing food intermittently. Aside from just being old, she has had some chronic health issues (Cushing's and osteosarcoma) for years, but I took her to the vet to make sure there was no other reason for her lack of appetite. He assured me that it was just her age and that I should try other food options to seduce her. I first tried Orijen's freeze-dried Tundra formula as a substitute for their raw food diet, as freeze-dried food is inferior to raw food. It was a great success with my two dogs. To give her some variety and hopefully keep her interested at mealtimes, I also ordered this Orijen Sublimated Regional Red Formula. I'm not sure if she has a favorite between the two formulas. She loves them both! I'm not sure if there is a big difference in taste. The regional red medallions are darker in color, but the resulting mixture smells the same when moistened. She eats twice a day, and for each meal I cut two medallions and moisten them with some warm goat's milk and a tablespoon of Answers. fermented fish broth (bought frozen from a local supplier for joint health). For now, this has solved her diet problem. Both freeze-dried formulas (Regional Red and Tundra) have a specific flavor - more so than their raw food mix or other dog foods I've used. . The smell, while not unpleasant, has a certain meaty pungency that both of my dogs are very attracted to. Any medallion (slightly smaller than a hockey puck) crumbles easily. When I first used them, I expected that their dryness would easily absorb water or other liquids. But at first they seem to repel warm liquids, which I think is due to the fat content. Crumbed medallions immediately absorb hot liquid quickly because hot water dissolves fat, but package directions say not to use hot (will kill enzymes in a raw food diet). Dog food, I would suggest rehydrating them at least a little first as they are really quite dry (they stuck to the inside of my shepherd's mouth when I gave him a piece of one of the dry medallions). He loves them, but at over 110 pounds he eats four bags of them for $35-$40 a week. So he just gets a rehydrated spoonful with his raw food every now and then. Orijen Regional Red is a low-carb, low-glycemic food with a high concentration of meat from protein sources such as Angus beef, bison, wild boar, lamb, pork, salmon and more. and herring. This also includes the heart, liver, tripe, bone marrow and cartilage. I love the fact that the ingredients come from local prairie farms and regional cold waters, and that they're made with no preservatives. And while it's not as convenient to just pour the chunks into a bowl, it's still pretty quick and easy to use. This regional red freeze dried food comes in a heavy duty zip bag. Be sure to keep the bag sealed so the medallions don't dry out and turn into pieces so hard they're too hard to break apart. I wish Orijen would have made them in larger packs. This one pound bag contains about 30 medallions, so one bag only lasts my terrier a week. My only real issue with this meal is that it's quite expensive.
