I don't know why these devices got bad reviews, but I can assume they thought their battery wasn't charging because of the AC adapter when it most likely was the case themselves Battery or defective circuitry on the motherboard. These devices cost almost a third of the price of official Lenovo devices and perfectly power the device. The cable is even longer when you consider the length of the AC part of the charger.
