I was nervous it would be defective as was the case with many other people. I was very excited to purchase this as well. Who doesn't want a pull-out toaster and toaster combo, right? Anyway, I followed the first update's directions and turned the oven on at 450 for 10 minutes with no food. I immediately noticed that the rear heating element did not light up at all. SO SAD! I called Hamilton Beach within a week and they were happy to send me a replacement. (Hint: their customer service department is amazing. Kudos to them.) However, they also said there is a significant difference in performance between the front and rear heating elements. They told me that the rear heating element wouldn't heat up at all, when in fact it does what it's designed to do. It still works even though it appears to be off. Customer service suggested I test the device by cooking something. They explained that if it's really flawed, it definitely won't roast evenly. They then told me how to get a replacement if mine stopped working properly (so nice!). I tested three slices of toast: one in the oven and two in the pop-up. and they are roasted PERFECTLY. This unit works great, although the rear heater never goes orange** because it's designed that way. ** I love this thing. This saves a lot of counter space and the toaster works great as a 2-in-1 without sacrificing quality. Buy it. Stop reading reviews obsessively. That works great!
