We lived in Texas and needed serious UPF protection for our daily activities. I personally hate sunscreen. It stinks, it usually feels awful, it doesn't spread evenly, it gets in your eyes and mouth, the list goes on. Also, my kids don't like using it. I find it much easier to convince them to wear a UPF shirt than to stand still for sun protection. The hoods go much further to hide their necks, ears and hair. I still put sunscreen on their face and sometimes on their necks when they don't want to wear a hood, but I find it a lot easier and guys like it better too. My youngest started asking for hoodies every day so we have several. He likes that they have thumb holes. I will say the size is a little different from the others we have. Especially if you use thumb holes. My youngest in stuff like this is usually XS. He can get away with the letter S, but he usually swims in it. This XS is a bit shorter again, especially when he puts his thumbs in the holes and basically moves his arms at all. However, he is taller for his age. All of this to say that we love these shirts, but you may need to check sizing to see what works best for you and your purposes.
