Review on πŸ”§ Melissa & Doug Colorful Extra Thick Construction Toy Set by John Shorter

MDF and paper construction that will disintegrate and tear off (into baby's mouth). The shapes aren't symmetrical, so they only go in one direction.

Wow, I love Melissa and Doug and their toy designs so let me tell you how surprised I was with this article. Of course I bought this item for my 9 month old and it is clearly intended for older children. So when your child is older and more advanced at jigsaw puzzles and no longer puts objects in their mouths, you may find this useful. However, the puzzle has three major pitfalls and not only would I not recommend or buy it again, it even goes in the trash after a day of use (see pic ONE DAY!): 1) The puzzle is made of MDF or pressed paper . And if the paper gets wet Yes, exactly. My baby is still teething so yeah he of course put some saliva on the puzzle pieces and they started falling apart so hooray he can eat the paper and the chemicals that bound the paper together! 2) The pictures are not painted, but the paper is glued to the MDF board. So if the paper gets wet, yes. I fished bits of blue paper out of my mouth. In fact, I tore off most of the paper so he couldn't eat it. 3) The main reason I bought this puzzle as described in the video is that the pieces go with almost anything. NOT CORRECT! Only square and rectangular are suitable. The oval, triangle and circle are one sided because they are hand cut and have a low tolerance (too low for a 'first' puzzle in my opinion) and therefore will not fit in any other direction due to eccentricity. 4) Slightly less frustratingly, the pieces of the puzzle are sawn in a continuous process rather than C&C, or sawed individually which means there are cut lines between the shapes for a continuous cut. It's ugly, but it doesn't really bother me, except that when the bandsaw hits the puzzle piece, it bites into it and leaves a sharp nick in the puzzle piece, and that's sort of the last straw of trouble. I've spent a lot of time researching puzzles for my kid and this turned out to be the best concept, but it's a shame I didn't go for a better construction even though it was a harder puzzle!
