Tried several of these little tube preamps/buffers. Others had assembly problems and generated a lot of noise. Chirping, ticking, clapping and lots of humming. This one is well built, and with a GOOD power supply and sensible placement, all noise is muted and only a slight low rumble. I replaced the supplied bulbs with GE 5654, very nice. Mallards are good, slightly darker; someone said "like a warm blanket". I agree. Voshkods is currently running; darling so far. Westinghouse is coming. My preamp tends to push the high mids a bit and the numbers were too noticeable. Now it's smoother and silkier. This little preamp sits in between my Carver preamp and amp, but doesn't work that well in a tape/processor cycle. My guess is that unity gain is about a quarter turn of the volume knob, in case you're wondering. UPDATE: Westinghouse 6AK5W tubes are now included, similar to Voshkod tubes, but no hum, just a barely audible hiss. Perfect.
