Butt connectors, even shrink connectors, will be difficult, and the hard core tends to crack if you bend them too much. It would be better if they were at least 18-20 gauge. For less than $1 each, you get what you pay for. We bought about 50 pieces (red, yellow and a few clear ones) for our shop to replace headlights on trailers and trucks.
